What Are AI Visibility Files?
A plain breakdown of the background files — llms.txt, JSON-LD, FAQ schema — that let AI systems read and cite your website.
What Are AI Visibility Files?
If you've read the AEO Tools for Websites Guide, you've already seen this term once — this page goes deeper, so you actually understand what's inside them and why each piece matters.
AI visibility files are the small, behind-the-scenes files on your website whose entire job is to explain your site to AI systems in a format they can read directly — instead of making them guess based on your design, your layout, or your homepage copy.
Why "visibility" is the right word for this
A website can be perfectly visible to a human and completely invisible to an AI system, at the same time. That sounds strange until you remember: AI systems aren't looking at your site the way a person does. They're not admiring your photos or reading your headline for tone. They're scanning for plain, structured facts — and if those facts aren't there in a format they recognize, your site might as well not exist to them, no matter how good it looks to a visitor.
Visibility files exist to close that gap. They don't change how your site looks. They add a second, quieter layer underneath it — one written specifically for machines.
The pieces that make up this layer
This isn't one single file — it's a small collection of pieces, each doing a specific job:
- llms.txt — a plain-text summary of what your site is and what it contains, similar in spirit to the long-standing robots.txt file, but written to orient AI systems rather than restrict search crawlers.
- JSON-LD structured data — code embedded in each page that spells out exactly what that page is, in labeled, unambiguous terms a machine can parse instantly.
- FAQ schema — markup that flags your question-and-answer content specifically, so it can be lifted directly into an AI-generated answer.
- Entity and knowledge-graph files — files that clearly define the key "things" your site is about — your business, your products, key people or locations — and how they relate to each other.
Individually, each piece answers one narrow question. Together, they give an AI system a complete, confident picture of your site with nothing left to infer.
What happens without them
Without visibility files, an AI system visiting your site has to interpret it — infer what you do from your homepage layout, guess at what your pages mean from context clues, decide on its own whether you're a trustworthy source. Some sites get lucky and are interpreted correctly. Many aren't — not because the business is unclear to a person, but because nothing on the page was ever written in a format a machine could confidently parse.
That's the actual risk here: not that your site is bad, but that it's ambiguous to the systems now deciding who gets mentioned and who doesn't.
The good news
None of this requires rebuilding your website. Visibility files sit alongside what you already have — they don't touch your design, your branding, or your existing pages. They just add the missing translation layer underneath.
