AEO Fundamentals
What Is Answer Engine Optimization?
A plain explanation of AEO — what it is, how it differs from SEO, and why it matters as AI answers replace search results.
What Is Answer Engine Optimization?
If you're asking this question, you're not behind — you're early. Almost nobody had heard this term two years ago, because the thing it describes didn't really exist yet.
Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the practice of making your website understandable to AI systems — like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google's AI Overviews — so they can accurately read, trust, and cite what your site offers.
That's the one-sentence version. Here's the plain-English version underneath it.
The short history that explains why this matters
For about twenty years, getting found online meant one thing: search engine optimization, or SEO. You optimized your website so Google's crawler could find it, understand it, and rank it in a list of blue links. A person would then scan that list and click whichever one looked most useful.
That's changing. More people are now asking an AI system a question directly and getting a written answer back — no list, no clicking through ten options. Sometimes the AI mentions a source. Sometimes it doesn't. Either way, your website isn't competing to be ranked anymore. It's competing to be understood well enough to be worth mentioning at all.
That shift is what AEO responds to.
How AEO is different from SEO
SEO and AEO aren't opposites — they overlap a lot — but they're not the same test, either.
- SEO is mostly about links, keywords, and signals that help a crawler decide where your page ranks in a list.
- AEO is about whether an AI system can clearly understand what your page is saying, well enough to summarize it, trust it, and repeat it as part of an answer.
A site can rank well in Google and still be functionally invisible to an AI system, if that AI system can't clearly parse what the page actually means. That's the gap AEO exists to close.
What AEO actually involves
Three things, working together:
1. Making your site machine-readable — adding structured data and AI visibility files (like llms.txt and JSON-LD) that plainly tell AI systems what your business is and what your pages contain, in a format they parse instantly instead of guessing at.
2. Writing content in the shape AI systems pull answers from — direct questions and direct answers, rather than content written purely to rank in a search list.
3. Making sure that content is easy to find and verify as trustworthy — through clean technical structure and, increasingly, redundant distribution (like mirroring key content to GitHub Pages).
Miss any one of these and the others don't work as well on their own.
Why this is worth paying attention to now
Here's the honest, non-hyped version: almost no one has done this yet. Not because it's difficult — because most site owners don't know it's a thing they should be doing. That's a real, if temporary, advantage. The same kind of advantage early SEO adopters had twenty years ago, before "optimizing for Google" was something every business did as a matter of course.
That window narrows every month more people learn this exists.
